The United States Playing Card Company (Bicycle Cards)

History

The United States Playing Card Company (USPCC) was founded in 1867 as Russell, Morgan & Co., a printing company. In 1881, Colonel Robert J. Morgan recruited a talented young inventor in New York, Samuel J. Murray, whose patented inventions quadrupled the volume of cards at his company's factory in Norwood, Ohio. reduced labor costs by 66%. Murray has also created a two-sided enameling machine.

He is a big producer and distributor of playing cards. His many brands include Bicycle, Bee, Tally-Ho, Congress, Hoyle, Aviator, Aristocrat, KEM and many others. It also makes fancy and custom cards, as well as other accessories such as poker chips. The company was formerly based in Cincinnati, Ohio, but its headquarters are now located in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Erlanger, Kentucky. He is currently a subsidiary of Newell Brands.

The company started printing four kinds of playing cards in 1881: Tigers (No. 101), Sportsman (No. 202), Army and Navy (both No. 303, No. 505 with Gold Edges) and Congress (No. 404, No. 606 with gold edges). They began printing bicycle cards, which would become their most popular lineup, in 1885. Business exploded and in 1891, Russel, Morgan, & Co. changed its name to become the United States Printing Company. The card business was successful enough to become a separate business in 1894 under the name of The United States Playing Card Company.

The same year, it began acquiring smaller playing card manufacturers by acquiring the Standard Playing Card Company, Perfection Playing Card Company, and New York Consolidated Card Company (Bee manufacturers and innovators of "squeezer" card IDs corners: a design still used today).

Playing cards for bicycles are probably the most recognizable brand of playing cards in the world. Although most people probably associate the Bicycle playing cards with the famous "Rider Back" motif, the United States Playing Card Company, or "USPCC" (a company that produces the Bicycle brand), has actually produced more than 80 different motifs bearing the name "Bicycle". during the first decades of the brand's existence. The design of Rider Back is obviously the most familiar, being in constant production since 1887. But it is, in fact, the second design which bears the name of "Bicycle"; the first was the Old Fan motif, which was created in 1885 (and recently relaunched to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Bicycle brand).

Bicycle playing cards were originally produced in red, blue, green and brown, but the green and brown card games were removed in 1927.
